Poetry

Title Retreating Wind
Author Louise Gluck

This is a video based off of Louise Glück's (pronounced Glick) poem "Retreating Wind" from her book The Wild Iris (1992). The I in this poem seems to be an omnipotent, or at least omnipresent, character (perhaps God). I find it profound that such a character speaks with so much tenderness and pity ("pity" here being a loving sadness, as opposed to a judgmental looking-down upon). I think the video is attempting to maintain the voice of the speaker in the simplicity of the notes that are left around the house. The video isn't very well produced in itself, but I think it gets its point across. Plus the poem is beautiful and haunting regardless.

Title Sicko
Director Michael Moore

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore is a lot of things. Bombastic. Over the top. Sarcastic. But there's no doubt in my mind that he's also brave. He has to be- and maybe a little crazy- to take on the themes featured in his films. Massive layoffs in the auto industry in Roger and Me. Violence in America in Bowling for Columbine. The buildup to the Iraq invasion in Fahrenheit 9/11. Lighthearted themes these are not, though if you've seen a Moore film you know his approach often is. The latest offering from the Flint, Michigan native fits comfortably within the Moore cannon. Some critics have pointed out that this film is more subtle than previous offerings. Indeed, we don't actually see the scruffy Moore until halfway through Sicko . When he does make an appearance his demeanor is more sincere inquirer and less the trickster who pranked Charlton Heston so wonderfully in Bowling for Columbine.

Title Knocked Up
Director Judd Apatow

The other night over pan Asian cuisine my husband asked me what my latest film visit, Knocked Up starring Katherine Heigl and Seth Rosen, was about. My summary to him, a one-night stand that results in a pregnancy.

"Was it really as predictable as it sounds?" he asked.

"No, not at all," I responded.

That's the long and short of what I have to say about this movie. However when I consider how this cinematic story line, a recipe for sheer and utter disaster, turns out to be a comedy, I'm compelled to say more.

Title Remind Me
Artist Royksopp

The opening scene of Stranger Than Fiction follows Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) through the monotony of his daily routine as an IRS employee. Each day is both calculated and methodical. It is absurd, yet normal.

Although most would never claim to be anything close to a "Harold Crick", the predictability of life is no stranger to our own experience.

Question. Why do we do what we do?
