Influenced by Whom? (the art of Phil Hansen) PDF Print E-mail

Art

Title Influence
Artist Phil Hansen

While creative people have always existed, the Internet has made it easier for the general public to discover and experience these individuals and their work via sites like YouTube, blogs, etc. If you have yet to experience Phil Hansen’s art, it's time. His Influence piece grabbed YouTube attention last year when he honored 30 individuals who have most impacted his life via his chest. This video was not only a beautiful tribute, but also posed an intriguing question:  Who has influenced your life?

Influence is an interesting word, because it is not bound by the positive or negative. In fact, Hansen gives Hitler one of the 30 spots which certainly raised a few eyebrows; however, it is obvious (as Hansen alludes) that Hitler has greatly “influenced” our world’s perspective of humanity and its capabilities.

Title Planet Earth [Sigor Rus]
Type Advertisement

Reeses had these great commercials for Peanut Butter Cups where one guy would be walking around with a chocolate bar and another would be cruising around with an open jar of peanut butter, and thanks to some Keystone Cop's kind of moment, they would slam into each other. The random collision would produce a chocolate/peanut butter fusion that we would forever after know as the Peanut Butter Cup. Thus proving, that the bringing together of two great things can produce an even greater third.

The transcendence of The Discovery Channel's Planet Earth series has already been mentioned here at rednoW. Likewise, the beauty and wonder of Sigor Rus music as been put before us.

But what do you get when you bring these two things together?

Review: What is the What PDF Print E-mail

All I can really say about Dave Eggers' latest novel, entitled What is the What, is the following: this book is very, very important.

Don't get me wrong; I'd love to sit down and write a descriptive, appreciative, praise-filled review of What is the What. However, I think the reason I find myself struggling to do this reinforces my strong belief that Eggers' work speaks entirely for itself.

What is the What is the fictionalized autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng, a Sudanese refugee who was displaced during his country's civil war.

Thoughts on Absurdity PDF Print E-mail
The Absurd. Some of us love it and some of us don't get it. Yet, why are we drawn to it? What is it that makes us want to watch or participate in the bizarre or absurd?

The Surrealists would have (or would have had) us believe that the unconscious wakes up as we enter into the absurd. That is, think about your dream iife. Or think about those Rozerem sleeping pill commercials: Abe Lincoln and a talking beaver hanging out together. The commercials work because we instantly recognize a talking beaver and Abe Lincoln as something that would happen in a dream. The unconscious that provides our dream life is absurd. Surrealists believed that we could achieve both personal and social liberation through this contact with the absurd. To some extent, they were right.

Now, the absurd won't start a revolution; people tuning into their unconscious will not save humankind. But, it does help us wake up.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
